5/24/2023 0 Comments Unbury carol josh malerman![]() ![]() It’s strange that many of the actual events of the book center around the actions of three men: the aforementioned Moxie Carol’s husband, Dwight and Smoke, sent to kill Moxie and stop him from saving Carol. Malerman doesn’t waste time with such little things like exposition, and that might turn off some readers, but if you stick with it, there’s a wildly weird story to be had here.įor having the book named after her, Carol doesn’t actually do much within the story - at least not in the sense of taking action in the physical world. The dust jacket itself notes that this is actually a take on Sleeping Beauty. After all, Carol herself has these comas that make her seem like she’s dead, and she also has a lot of money. But there’s also a bit of the paranormal to it, and even a whole attempted murder plot too. There’s a lot of Western in it, what with a former outlaw literally named James Moxie as one of the main characters. It’s hard to describe Josh Malerman’s Unbury Carol. Still, the wild mix of genres might have some appeal for audiences. By Cheryl Wassenaar 5 years ago For such a relatively short novel, Unbury Carol takes a little while to start clicking. ![]()

5/24/2023 0 Comments Secret Worlds by Rebecca Hamilton![]() I’m not going to spill any of Rebecca’s amazing secrets here, but I will tell you that ONE tip from the first lesson helped me raise $13,000 to invest in becoming a full-time writer. Just one SINGLE tip from the very first lesson in the course (How am I gonna pay for this thing?) changed my ENTIRE life and enabled me to raise the money I needed to launch my writing career. So, I cut back on my fast-food spending and got in on Rebecca’s Budget Publishing Mastermind Course when that was still available. ![]() I was bored, miserable, and constantly getting turned down when I applied for so-called “real” jobs because my degree meant I was over-qualified. I wasn’t making any money from my writing, or anything else, for that matter. ![]() The closest I could say that I was to achieving my life goal was that I had the at home part going for me. At the beginning of last year, to say that I was struggling would be an incredible understatement. All I’ve ever wanted in the world is to be a full-time fiction writer who works from home (or wherever I want, as a matter of fact). I have had just ONE goal in life for as long as I can remember. ![]() Since this is such a frequently asked question for me, I decided to answer it with a blog post. Other writers I know are constantly asking me if the buy in on Rebecca Hamilton’s Publishing Mastermind Course is actually worth it. ![]() ![]() ![]() Some of the top deals include 50 percent off on Shark vacuums and air purifiers, up to 45 percent off Petcube indoor pet cameras and dog furniture (including from Casper and Amazon’s own Lesure brand), up to 40 percent off Ring video doorbells, up to 30 percent off Bissell pet care, up to 20 percent pet feeders and gear (including storage containers, carriers, water fountains and automatic feeders) and up to 15 percent off Dyson vacuums and more. Who was the stranger who had taken over her body? What was happening to her mind? In this swift and breathtaking narrative, Susannah tells the astonishing true story of her inexplicable descent into madness and the brilliant, lifesaving diagnosis that nearly didn't happen. Only weeks earlier, Susannah had been on the threshold of a new, adult life: a healthy, ambitious college grad a few months into her first serious relationship and a promising career as a cub reporter at a major New York newspaper. A wristband marked her as a "flight risk," and her medical records-chronicling a month-long hospital stay of which she had no memory at all-showed hallucinations, violence, and dangerous instability. One day in 2009, twenty-four-year-old Susannah Cahalan woke up alone in a strange hospital room, strapped to her bed, under guard, and unable to move or speak. ![]() A gripping memoir and medical suspense story about a young New York Post reporter's struggle with a rare and terrifying disease, opening a new window into the fascinating world of brain science. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Robert farris thompson books![]() It is that generation that was active in North American academia at the time. We chose to limit our study to these “ancestors” for several reasons. It was a time marked by the end of the colonial era in Africa and the beginning of African independence. ![]() 2 However, for this issue in celebration of the fifty years of African Arts, we limit our discussion to individuals who were working fifty years ago and the preparation of their students-the precise time African Arts made its appearance. ![]() 1 Another set of antecedents includes those European colonial officers, missionaries, and eventually scholars, who provided a wealth of information in colonial reports, travel writing, mission accounts, academic papers, publications, and other sources that formed a strong foundation on which to build our investigations of the arts of Africa. We are indebted to generations of African elders who not only passed information from one generation to the next but also shared their knowledge with those who visited their communities inquiring about the art, performances, rituals, and practices they created. We recognize our predecessors from many places and over great spans of time. ![]() ![]() In this issue of African Arts, several elders have chosen to remember, through different means, those who paved the way for our own explorations of the histories of the African arts-our academic ancestors. ![]() |
